Cari Elise Fletcher, who is known by her last name, has opened up about her new single, Boy. It is set to be part of 11 songs in her new album, Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me? The singer's new album will be released on July 18, 2025. She has been releasing some singles from the album, and Boy came out on June 5, 2025.

In it, part of the lyrics read,

“I kissed a boy. And I know it’s not what you wanted to hear/And it wasn’t on your bingo card this year/Well it wasn’t on mine/I fell in love.”

Fletcher has often spoken and sung about her sexual fluidity. Moreover, all of her songs about her relationships until now have been with women. Hence, these lyrics come as a surprise.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, published on June 5, she said,

“There will be people that feel disappointed and feel confused and have questions. Girl, I had questions and I was confused too. It shocked me just as much as anybody else.”

Fletcher asserted that she's "proud to be queer" and her engaging with a male doesn't negate that. She also admitted that she understands some of her fans will be disappointed, but she can't change herself.

Fletcher explains what message she wanted to give through Boy

The singer opens up in detail about the song with Rolling Stone. When asked what message she wants to deliver with Boy, she said,

"I was in the studio with [songwriters] Jen Decilveo and Shane McAnally. We were all discussing our queer journeys. I really wanted to capture and talk about what was happening in mine. I had met a boy and started feeling romantic and emotional feelings, and we kissed. I was like, 'What the f**k is going on?' My whole world felt flipped upside down."

She added,

"I’ve always written about my love stories and my heart and very candidly written about what I’ve been experiencing. Boy is just another love story. Boy is just one revelation of many. It’s not an album about a guy."

Fletcher further explained that she was dealing with a lot of things, including being diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2023. She said that she went through an intense healing journey that led to her reflecting on her career and life. This eventually led to her falling in love with a boy.

The 31-year-old was also asked if she's still seeing the boy she mentions in the song. While she doesn't reply directly, she did hint towards an affirmative response, saying,

“I am getting to experience love again. That is the most magical feeling in the entire world. I met a boy who is somehow way more connected to his feelings and his emotions and his heart than even I am.”

Fletcher also spoke about the fear of how Boy will be perceived. She mentioned that her career started with the song, Wasted Youth, where she sings about falling in love with a girl.

Hence, she said that it's "scary to share your truth" with the new development in her life.
