The 2025 BET Awards, held on June 9, 2025, have come under scrutiny for not including No More Rain fame Angie Stone in the 'Memoriam' segment. The 'In Memoriam' segment is a tribute honoring and remembering Black entertainers, innovators, and artists who passed away in the past year.
This year's BET honored late music icon Quincy Jones, who passed away in November 2024, at the age of 91, wherein Miles Caton, Luke James, and Lucky Daye came together to pay homage to Jones.
Additionally, the segment featured tributes to Nikki Giovanni, Wanda Smith, James Earl Jones, Tito Jackson, Roy Ayers, Lou Donaldson, and DJ Clark Kent.
Netizens quickly took to X to point out how the BET Awards left out the 2 Bad Habits singer in the memoriam segment.
Stone passed away in March 2025 at the age of 63. She is recognized for her contributions in film, music, and television.
Calling out the BET Awards for omitting Stone from the 'In Memoriam' segment and citing other complaints from the event, an X user tweeted:
"might be the best show in years, however: quincy jones deserved a full tribute. it’s ridiculous he didn’t get one. the lack of sinners appreciation isn’t sitting right with my spirit. leaving out angie stone was disrespectful. BRING BACK TELEVISING AWARD PRESENTATIONS"
"So did we forget Angie Stone from the memoriam tribute 🤔 #BETAwards2025 #BETAwards" an X user questioned
"So are we not doing a Angie Stone tribute?! Cause we should damn sure be doing one come one now……#BETAwards2025" an internet user stated
"where’s the angie stone tribute? BET don’t piss me off. #BETAwards" another internet user asked
In addition to questioning the BET authorities about the exclusion of Stone from the memoriam segment, fans of the singer claimed that BET Awards had disrespected the late singer:
"They didn't mention Angie Stone either and it's getting late. I thought they were gonna do a second set of tributes with performances but it looks like they aren't." an X user tweeted
"Now @BET WHERE is the Angie Stone tribute. Y’all had us tuned in like we were in Sunday service for 5 hours! & No Angie Stone tribute!" a netizen commented
"@BET Angie Stone disrespect is loud yall didn’t acknowledge her in the memorial tribute" another netizen remarked
According to Variety's March 1, 2025, report, Angie Stone died in a car crash while travelling from Montgomery, Alabama, to Atlanta.
The rapper and singer's demise was confirmed by a representative, stating that her Sprinter was struck by an 18-wheeler when she was returning from a show along with her band members.
Stone's Sprinter flipped thrice, resulting in her death. However, she was the only person in the vehicle to have passed away.
The late singer was born in 1961 in Colombia. In her formative years, she undertook singing in the church, forming a hip-hop trio called Sequence.
After moving to New York, Angie Stone signed with Sugar Hill Records and Sequence released Funk You Up in 1979. The track was sampled by Dr. Dre for his song Keep Their Heads Ringin'.
Later, Stone joined Vertical Hold, a musical trio, post which she launched her solo career.
While a lot of projects are highlights of the late singer and rapper's career, a video of her claims against Universal Music Group started making the rounds on the internet shortly after her death.
As per Times Now's March 2, 2025, report, Stone is seen questioning where her royalties were going after 40 years in the business in the video.
"Come to find out, Universal Music has been receiving all my royalties. They have taken pretty much everything.... they have taken all money that (was) due to me." Stone claimed
The late Rain Down singer released 10 solo albums in her career. Additionally, she received three Grammy nominations in categories like 'Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals' in 2003.
She was also nominated for best female R&B vocal performance in 2004.
