Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars is in development at Amazon Prime Video. It brings back the popular animated universe that Rebecca Sugar created, as reported by Deadline.
The franchise has spent years teasing out fan speculation and leaving a number of side characters with an open-ended finale. It is now turning its attention to one of its most engaging character stories—Lars Barriga's journey from surly teenager to cosmic rebel.
This sequel marks a new chapter for the Steven Universe universe, one which is far from Beach City and into the depths of space. The original Steven Universe ran from 2013 through 2019, with Steven Universe: The Movie and its epilogue miniseries Steven Universe Future following afterwards. Although Steven's emotional arc came to an end, the world that the series creator Rebecca Sugar built was too rich to remain unexplored.
Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars now picks up the narrative baton, promising a new perspective on life after the rebellion, this time led by a pink-skinned space captain and his crew of Off Colors.
Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars is actively in production, but this time for Amazon Prime Video, instead of Cartoon Network. However, a full season order has not yet been announced.
American animator and screenwriter, Rebecca Sugar, is reportedly involved in the creative direction, which strengthens the likelihood of continuity in tone, art style, and emotional depth. If greenlit, this would mark the franchise’s first major return since Steven Universe Future ended in 2020.

Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars will track the intergalactic adventures of Lars Barriga, a Beach City native who was once gifted with Gem abilities and transformed into a space-faring outcast. Lars was last captured traveling off-world with the Off Colors, a colony of cast-out Gems, on their next great adventure.
Although his storyline concluded in a pivotal moment within Steven Universe Future, his narrative never reached completion, making him the natural candidate to pilot this new chapter. Against a backdrop of uncharted galaxies and ruins of the Gem Empire, Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars is likely to delve into themes of leadership, rebellion, and belonging.
Lars, from his selfish teenager days, now has a ship and a crew, but navigating galactic politics and self-improvement is anything but easy. The series is expected to explore the Gem Empire's troubled past and its residual impacts of conflict.
The new environment also opens up for a shift in tone. With the upcoming project being made available on Prime Video, it can delve deeper into more mature topics that were held back by Cartoon Network's younger audience.

By centering on Lars, the franchise is rebooted with a thrilling direction without repeating Steven's now-resolved journey. Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars may connect to a segment of the fanbase that has always been interested in things outside the planet and the lives of secondary characters.
It adds to the canon without sacrificing what has already been established. Lars himself isn't much of a typical hero. He's gangly, hesitant, and has a tendency to second-guess himself, but that's also what makes him so endearing. With the upcoming project, fans can look forward to seeing him become a leader, confront unresolved traumas, and deepen his connection with the Off Colors.
