Cardi B added one more honor to her long list of awards as she received the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year Award on June 8, 2025. Cardi was also honored with the ASCAP Voice of the Culture Award for her influence on music and culture as a creator and changemaker.
However, it was Cardi B's acceptance speech for the 2025 ASCAP awards that ended up going viral on the internet, wherein she said:
"I want to tell you something for the writers. I hate the idea that if you don't write every line on your own that it makes what you have to say not real. Music is a collaboration, it has always been. The biggest hits, the greatest records, come from teamwork. They come from sharing experiences, energy, pain, and joy".
In her acceptance speech, Cardi B mentioned having a team of writers, stating:
"It's not about ego, it's about impact, and I love my team, and I love that my team have become one of my best friends and we have become best friends making music."
Netizens quickly took to X to express their opinions on Cardi's speech, wherein an X user took a dig at the rapper's way of reading out the speech and the part where she talked about her team of writers, tweeting:
"While she’s up there reading at a 3rd grade level. The jokes WRITE themselves 😭🤣"
"A “songwriter” but she use her phone for a basic speech…." an X user commented
"Stop with the bulls*it. You have writers. You shouldn’t be winning an award for the ASCAP. Simple." another X user mentioned
"Reciting is not writing but congrats for your undeserved award babes." an internet user stated
"cant rap & can barely speak but you write? OHHH 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣" another internet user said
On the other hand, fans of the WAP rapper celebrated her ASCAP win and encouraged her:
"Empress of rap for a reason!" an X user tweeted
"She's the best and most impactful female rapper ever" a netizen expressed
"I’m proud of you @iamcardib. These flowers and recognition you get for your writing and talent, that’s what matters. Not what haters say behind these pages. Please always remember that" another netizen remarked
On June 8, 2025, Cardi B received the Rhythm & Soul Award for her track 2024 Enough (Miami). She had previously created history by being the first woman to receive the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year Award twice in a row in 2020.
Additionally, the rapper has received 23 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music awards and 8 ASCAP Pop Music awards to date. While honoring Cardi with the award, ASCAP chairman Paul Williams complimented her for "redefining and challenging the norms for women" in the hip-hop spectrum. Williams also dubbed the Up rapper an "unapologetic authenticity and talent."
In addition to crediting her team and calling the process of making music "teamwork", Cardi B dedicated the ASCAP award to the power a writer's pen holds.
"I write, I co-write, I rewrite. I speak to what’s true to me. My pen, my mind, my feelings are in every verse and in every hook and I respect every writer who brings their magic to the table." Cardi said
She continued:
"This award is not just for me. It’s for the culture, for every writer who help shape it and make us do something. Let’s keep pushing our pens and the power that comes with it.”
In other news, Cardi B has been making headlines after she recently made her relationship with NFL player Stefon Diggs official. She also attended a Youth Football Camp at the University of Maryland on June 7, 2025, just a day before the ASCAP Awards.
