Netflix's latest drama-thriller film, Straw, starring Taraji P. Henson, has gained significant traction among audiences. The film centers on Henson's character, Janiyah Wiltkinson, a single mother. It chronicles a series of unfortunate events that draw the attention of authorities as she struggles to navigate an unfair world.
Janiyah's daughter means everything to her, and her safety and well-being are her utmost priorities. Therefore, she takes extreme measures when things do not go as planned for her in Straw.

After being fired by her boss, Richard, and denied her final paycheck, Janiyah visits him to demand what she rightfully deserves. However, there she finds herself amid a burglary attempt, during which Richard accuses her of involvement, resulting in her shooting him.
Following the incident, she heads to the bank with the bloodied check she has managed to obtain, only to realize that she needs an identification document, which she does not possess. With no other option, she decides to orchestrate a bank robbery with the gun she took from the store.
Soon, the authorities arrive at the scene, and she is arrested after some back and forth. Detective Raymond, who was the main person pursuing Janiyah's case, could have killed her but chose not to. This is primarily because she found common ground during the investigation and developed a sense of empathy towards her.
As previously mentioned, Janiyah does not meet her end in Netflix's Straw. However, she is taken into custody by Detective Raymond and the police.
Her fate following the arrest is not shown in the film. She is only seen being taken away by a police vehicle while several people wait outside, showing their support and holding placards.
Under these circumstances, the ending of Straw is seemingly open-ended. This is because, although Janiyah is taken away, she is not shown to be punished. Talking about the ending, writer and director Tyler Perry, in an interview published on Tudum on June 6, 2025, says:
“What is the reality of this movie? What does that feel like? The choice is left to the audience to decide what they want to believe.”
Netflix's Straw is about Taraji P. Henson's Janiyah Wiltkinson, who is having a difficult time surviving under her circumstances. While she already has things to worry about, including her ailing child, she is embroiled in one mess after another, making her life more complicated.
