Sri Lanka host Chinese Taipei at the Colombo Racecourse on Tuesday for a clash in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, looking to recover from their opening game loss. Ranked 200th in the world, Sri Lanka fell to a 1-0 loss against Thailand on matchday one.
Patrik Gustavsson struck the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute to hand the War Elephants all three points.
After the first round of games, the Golden Army sit rock-bottom in Group D without a point in the bag and a goal scored - a reading that they would like to change after the second installment of qualifiers.
Since that game, however, the South Asian side have played once more, a friendly to Brunei which they won 1-0 last week, their second win of 2025 in three games as Sri Lanka have shown signs of improvement.
On the other hand, Chinese Taipei also went down 2-1 to Turkmenistan in their first qualifying fixture of the Asian Cup back in March. Elman Tagayew fired the Greens in front minutes into the second half, but Ange Kouame equalized for Chinese Taipei in the 63rd minute.
Their joy, however, lasted only 20 minutes as Yazgylyc Gurbanow restored Turkmenistan's lead in the closing stages of normal time to consign them to a 2-1 loss.
Head coach Chen Sing-An has summoned 23 players for this month's fixture against Sri Lanka, including skipper and key goalscorer Chen Po-liang. The 36-year-old midfield veteran has made 93 appearances for the side and struck 25 times.
Sri Lanka are one of the 12 sides ranked 200 or lower, making them one of the weakest sides in the world. Nonetheless, they have shown signs of improvement lately. In keeping with that, we're going with a narrow win for them over a stuttering Taipei outfit.
Prediction: Sri Lanka 1-0 Chinese Taipei
Tip 1 - Result: Sri Lanka to win
Tip 2 - Goals over/under 2.5: Under 2.5 goals
