Cody Gakpo has responded to rumors linking him with a move away from Liverpool this summer while on international duty with the Netherlands national team. Gakpo moved to Anfield from PSV Eindhoven in 2023, and his current contract with the Merseyside club expires in 2028.
After winning the 2024-25 Premier League title, reports emerged that the Reds are planning a massive summer clear-out, and Gakpo’s name was surprisingly mentioned. The Dutchman is reportedly attracting interest from Bayern Munich.
In a press conference on Friday, Gakpo was asked about his rumored move to the Allianz Arena, to which he responded (via Tribal Football):
"I haven't heard anything about it myself. I'm closing myself off from it. Maybe my agent has heard something, but I'm focusing on myself."
Cody Gakpo played a key role in the Reds' recent Premier League triumph, featuring in 35 league matches. He made 25 goal contributions in 49 appearances across competitions in the recently concluded season.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is ready to offer Cody Gakpo a new contract to keep Bayern Munich at bay. As per the report, the Bavarians’ pursuit of Gakpo will hinge on Leroy Sane’s decision regarding a contract extension. Sane’s contract with Bayern will run out at the end of this month and it is looking as though he will leave the club as a free agent.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke reported that Slot will do everything within his power to keep Gakpo at Anfield. He told Football Insider:
"I’d be very surprised if Liverpool would even entertain any offers for Cody Gakpo. We know Bayern Munich were also in the race for Florian Wirtz – it looks like they’ve missed out on him to Liverpool – and are looking at other attacking reinforcements. I think a lot will depend on Leroy Sane as well; if he ends up signing a new contract at Bayern Munich, I don’t imagine they would push ahead to try and sign Gakpo."
"Gakpo is a big favourite of Arne Slot and did a really good job last season. He got 18 goals and seven assists in all competitions, and at 26, I think he’s coming to the peak of his career. We’ve seen what he can do for Liverpool on a regular basis – I don’t think that Liverpool would even consider selling him to Bayern. The most likely scenario might be that Gakpo gets a new contract at Anfield. He obviously signed two and a half seasons ago from PSV, and still on the same terms as that one I would imagine."
“Although he’s still got three years to run on that deal, Liverpool will maybe sit down with him at some point to discuss a new deal, to sort out his future and end any speculation over a move away. It’s more likely that Liverpool will look to keep Gakpo rather than even consider selling him, despite these links with Bayern Munich.”
Gakpo’s current market value is €70 million, as per Transfermarkt.
