Forgotten WWE match type would work in America today, Konnan thinks (Exclusive)

Konnan commentated on AAA and WWE's Worlds Collide event on June 7 alongside NXT announcer Corey Graves. In an exclusive interview, the former WCW star addressed the topic of intergender wrestling in Mexico and the United States.

On April 19, WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H announced the company's acquisition of AAA. WWE's men and women have not faced each other regularly since the likes of Chyna and Lita fought male stars in the early 2000s. AAA, by contrast, often books intergender bouts.

Konnan is a member of the AAA creative team. Speaking to Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, the 61-year-old predicted that American fans would like intergender matches if they happened more frequently.

"AAA is where the intergender matches started," Konnan said. "I don't know why they don't do them in the United States because they're great matches. When I was in MLW and I would tell the owner there, Court Bauer, 'Why don't you do intergender wrestling?' And so people don't understand how cool those matches can be, but they will." Konnan enjoys another unique AAA match type

In the 1980s and 1990s, former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon occasionally booked mini wrestlers in matches on television. One of the most famous examples came at WrestleMania 3, where Hillbilly Jim, Haiti Kid, and Little Beaver defeated King Kong Bundy, Little Tokyo, and Lord Littlebrook.

Like intergender wrestling, Konnan thinks AAA's modern-day presentation of mini wrestlers would appeal to American fans:

"I loved them, too, the little people, right? I grew up watching them because they were different and they were funny, right? But these guys, they're not like you know how you'd look at them [in past generations] and they were kinda deformed. They're just kinda shorter, and they [current stars] can do a lot in the ring that even the big guys can't do. People will be very surprised when they see them." [10:40 – 11:09]

The wrestling legend also revealed what he said to Chad Gable after the WWE star's loss to El Hijo del Vikingo at Worlds Collide.
