WWE Superstar CM Punk interrupted John Cena during his in-ring promo on this week’s episode of RAW. The Second City Saint fired several shots at the Undisputed Champion and challenged him for the title.
While The Straight Edge Superstar wanted the match to be held on the same night, Cena said he would give Punk a shot only at Night of Champions. Here are three reasons why this matchup is a bad idea and could easily backfire.
Back in late 2019, CM Punk was the host of the WWE Backstage show. After being released from the Stamford-based promotion in 2014, Punk noted that he would change the company's culture upon his return. However, The Miz made a sarcastic comment on him hosting Backstage without bringing any change to the culture whatsoever.
The Second City Saint took offense to this and posted an angry reaction in a now-deleted tweet, targeting The Awesome One and labeling WWE’s collaboration with Saudi Arabia as one involving blood money.
Now, if CM Punk goes to Saudi Arabia and competes in what would most likely be the main event of Night of Champions, it would expose him as a hypocrite. Although he had apologized for his remarks, hardcore fans clearly remember his words.
The 2025 Night of Champions will take place on June 28. This leaves less than three weeks for the company to hype the match between John Cena and CM Punk. This could result in an underwhelming buildup for their eventual confrontation in Saudi Arabia.
Unless WWE plans to use Cena and Punk to make appearances on SmackDown, only two more episodes of RAW remain ahead of Night of Champions. Thus, the Stamford-based promotion would have to rely a lot on the pre-existing rivalry Punk and Cena shared before 2014 and The Last Real Champion’s 2025 Elimination Chamber victory.
CM Punk and John Cena share one of the most iconic rivalries in the history of WWE. The latter mentioned that this would be the final time both wrestlers would collide, owing to his retirement tour. Thus, instead of Night of Champions, it would be more apt if they competed at SummerSlam.
This would give the Stamford-based promotion some much-needed time to create a great buildup and create a great match for the Biggest Party of the Summer. Moreover, The Last Real Champion said that he still has 19 appearances left on his retirement tour.
A match at SummerSlam would make it more believable that Mr. You Can't See Me may lose the match and possibly get dethroned. Something Night of Champions isn't going to offer. It would be interesting to see what lies ahead for CM Punk and John Cena.
