A new 20/20 episode, titled I Have Killed For You, explores the story of Bonnie Woodward, a 47-year-old woman who disappeared on June 25, 2010. She was last seen at the parking lot of her workplace in Alton, Illinois.
A nurse working at Eunice Smith Nursing Home revealed that the 20/20 subject Bonnie was last seen talking to an older man with salt-and-pepper hair. The case took a more critical turn when Bonnie's teenage stepdaughter also ran away from home, returning eight days after the disappearance.
The 20/20 episode details the complete investigation to uncover the true culprit behind Bonnie Woodward's disappearance. It premiered on June 6, 2025, on ABC and is now available for streaming on Hulu.
As reported by The Telegraph, at the time of her disappearance, Bonnie Woodward was living with her boyfriend and her stepdaughter, Heather. Eight days after Heather ran away from home, she returned to a local library. She revealed that she was staying with one of the families named the Carrolls at her church congregation.
Investigators later found Bonnie's red Chevy Avalanche truck abandoned, with the windows rolled down. As per Bonnie's niece, Rachel Lee, this was highly unusual, as Bonnie had worked hard to pay for the vehicle and took care of it.
When authorities inspected the abandoned vehicle, they discovered fingerprints belonging to Roger Carroll. Upon examination, the witness confirmed that it was Roger with whom Bonnie had been seen speaking before she disappeared.
As reported by ABC News, in the 20/20 episode, suspect Roger Carroll was interrogated; he denied talking to Bonnie at that scene and claimed that he had been framed. However, the case soon went cold due to a lack of enough evidence to charge and arrest Roger.
In March 2018, the 20/20 case was reopened after Roger's former wife, Monica, left him following a domestic assault. Monica recalled that during one of their violent arguments, Roger told her:
"I have killed for you."
When authorities began searching for Roger Carroll, they found him in the woods, attempting suicide by injecting insulin. He was arrested and charged with both domestic abuse and the murder of Bonnie Woodward.
As reported by The Telegraph, Roger's son, Nathan Carroll—who was a minor at the time of the incident—later testified against his father. As reported by ABC News, after Nathan turned 24, he was called to testify before a grand jury. During his testimony, Nathan revealed that he had heard eight to nine gunshots while eating lunch at home.
He also stated that he saw his father pick up a body with a front loader. The body, he said, was dressed in white pants and white sneakers. As reported by ABC News, Roger then instructed Nathan to assist him in dumping the body in a pile of bushes in their backyard.
Nathan eventually led investigators to key locations where the body of the 20/20 subject Bonnie Woodward had been shot, burned, and discarded in a nearby creek. Upon thorough investigation, authorities recovered 27 bone fragments, which were identified as belonging to Bonnie Woodward.
On March 16, 2020, Roger Carroll was found guilty of the murder of Bonnie Woodward, as reported by ABC News. He was sentenced to 65 years behind bars, which included 40 years for first-degree murder and 25 years for the possession of a firearm.
According to The Telegraph, Roger's former wife, Monica, described him as a "monster" with extreme anger issues. She testified in court that she was forcefully held captive at their Jerseyville residence, beaten, thrown to the floor, and tasered almost 12 times. As per ABC News, the domestic abuse charges were later dropped by prosecutors.
