What is the documentary film all about?

The trailer for Titan: The OceanGate Disaster was released on May 22, 2025, and is available on Netflix's official YouTube channel. The documentary begins with an interviewee explaining that it was a mathematical certainty that the Titan submersible would not succeed in its mission.

Multiple other people explain that Stockton, the CEO of OceanGate, wanted to exploit tourism opportunities for the Titanic and truly believed in the submersible. The briefing about Stockton is accompanied by various photographs and short clips of the CEO and the making of the submersible.

In the clip, Stockton is heard speaking about his then-upcoming endeavour to the Titanic in his submersible.

"I have no desire to die. I understand this kind of risk," Stockton says.

The interviewees express their concern, citing that Stockton may have been a "borderline psychopath" and also suggesting that his wealth and position made him difficult to manage. The trailer also reveals that Stockton wanted to make his accountant, Bonnie, the pilot for his submersible, which she refused. Various clips from the submersible and their journey before are shown as well in the trailer.

The upcoming Netflix documentary Titan: The OceanGate Disaster is based on a true story. The expedition was planned in 2023 by OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who saw an opportunity to start tourism to the RMS Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912, in the North Atlantic Ocean. Stockton went against expert advice and, to showcase its safety, went on the first expedition himself, along with four others.

During its descent, the submersible imploded, causing the death of all five passengers on board, including Stockton. After a four-day search and rescue organized by the United States and Canada coast guards, debris of the submersible Titan was discovered at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean. Three of the passengers paid $250,000 for a seat in the submersible.
