French striker Neal Maupay, who plays for Olympique Marseille on loan from Everton, has named Argentina legend Lionel Messi as the GOAT. The 28-year-old did it in response to a viral Cristiano Ronaldo tweet.
An X account by the name of Just Bizarre Tactics, which posts satirical stuff, posted a screenshot three days ago, which showed Neal Maupay advising the Portuguese superstar to retire by commenting on his Instagram post. However, Maupay was quick to clarify that it was not his real account.
"Sorry to disappoint but this ain't me," he wrote.
In the same thread, the Frenchman opined that Messi is the greatest of all time. The tweet read (via Neal Maupay's official X handle):
"Messi the GOAT tho."
The 'Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo' debate has been going on for years now, with fans, footballers, and pundits picking a side. Messi currently plays for Major League Soccer outfit Inter Miami and is also their captain. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is not playing in Europe either. The Portuguese icon leads Al-Nassr's attacking third in the Saudi Pro League, though his contract ends this month.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal will meet Spain in the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday (June 8). Ronaldo, who won the competition in its inaugural edition in 2018-19, will be aiming to add a second title to his trophy cabinet.
During a press conference ahead of the game, the 40-year-old was asked if there was a possibility that he and Messi would play for the same team. He swiftly replied (via myKhel):
"You never know. You know I have a lot of affection for Argentina, my wife is Argentinian. I want to go to Argentina, I have a lot of affection for the Argentinians and for Messi. We were rivals for many years, for 15 years. I used to translate for him at the galas, I'm very fond of him, he's always respected me and I him."
Al-Nassr skipper Cristiano Ronaldo has played 36 matches against Lionel Messi, who captains Inter Miami in the MLS, and has emerged victorious on 11 occasions, losing 16 matches and drawing nine times. They have played two international games against each other, with both winning apiece.
