Shubman Gill will be captaining Team India in England during the upcoming five-match Test series, which will be played from June 20 to August 4. The Indian team is already in England to prepare of the big series. Before the Test matches get underway, the visitors will feature in a four-day warm-up match in Beckenham from June 13 to June 16.
Gill was named Team India's new Test captain after Rohit Sharma announced his red-ball retirement last month following the disastrous tour of Australia. Apart from Rohit, the new Indian skipper will also be without the services of Virat Kohli, who also announced his Test retirement in May. Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin had called it quits from international cricket midway through the Australia tour.
Gill will be in for a huge challenge during the grueling five-match Test series in England. While his leadership will be under the scanner, he will also need to prove himself with the bat on a tough tour. The 25-year-old has so far featured in 32 Test matches. Having played 32 Test matches, Gill has scored 1,893 runs at a middling average of 35.05. The elegant batter has notched up 592 runs in 18 innings against England at an average of 37. He has also scored 537 runs in 16 innings against Australia, averaging 35.80 and 324 runs in 10 innings against New Zealand at an average of 32.40. Against Bangladesh, Gill has 321 runs from eight innings.
After 32 Tests, Ponting had notched up 2,004 runs at a healthy average of 43.46. He ended his illustrious career with 13,378 runs in 168 matches at an average of 51.85. Of his 2,004 runs after 32 Test matches, 446 runs came in eight innings against Sri Lanka at an average of 63.71.
Punter also scored 316 runs in 16 innings against Pakistan, averaging 63.20 and 288 runs in nine innings against Ashes rivals England at an average of 32. Ponting played five Tests against India during the phase. In nine innings, he scored 278 runs at an average of 30.88.
In 32 Test matches, Gill has registered five centuries and seven half-centuries. Of his five Test hundreds, two each have been scored against England and Bangladesh, while one has been notched up against Australia. The 25-year-old's career-best score of 128 came against Australia in Ahmedabad in March 2023.
Gill also scored 119* against Bangladesh in Chennai (September 2024) and 110 against the same opponent in Chattogram (December 2022). The right-hander registered two tons during England's tour of India in 2024. He scored 110 in Dharamsala and 104 in Visakhapatnam.

After 32 Tests, Ponting had six hundreds to his name - all of them were scored against different countries. He scored a ton each against England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies.
The former Australian captain hit 197 against Pakistan in Perth (November 1999), 127 against England in Leeds (July 1997) and 125 against India in Adelaide (December 1999). He also scored 105* against Sri Lanka in Colombo (September 1999), 105 against South Africa in Melbourne (December 1997) and 104 against West Indies in Bridgetown (March 1999).
Of his 32 Tests, Gill has played 13 Tests away from home. In 24 innings, he has notched up 649 runs at an average of 29.50, with one hundred and two half-centuries. He has also played two Tests at neutral venues, scoring 67 runs.
Gill's only away Test ton so far has come in Bangladesh. He scored 110 in Chattogram in December 2022. The batter narrowly missed out on a ton in Australia as he was dismissed for 91 in The Gabba Test in January 2021.
